What Is Ear Pressure?
Ear pressure is most often linked to a problem with the eustachian tube, a small passage that connects the middle ear to the back of the nose. This tube helps keep pressure balanced on both sides of the eardrum and allows fluid to drain from the ear. Normal daily actions, like swallowing, yawning, or chewing, help the eustachian tube open and maintain that balance.
Trouble begins when the eustachian tube becomes blocked or does not open as it should. Some of the most common reasons for a blocked eustachian tube include:
- Inflammation and swelling caused by the common cold
- Allergies
- Infection of the sinuses, ears, or throat
- Nasal irritation from allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
- Enlarged adenoids
People experiencing ear pressure might notice a sense of fullness or clogging in the ear, which may be accompanied by pain, changes in hearing, ringing sounds, or a popping or clicking sensation when they move their jaw. Some might also have an itching or tickling feeling inside the ear. These symptoms are often more noticeable during altitude changes, such as when you're flying, diving, or driving.
Ear pressure will often clear up on its own, but if it's severe or long-lasting, our specialists at Beach Cities ENTS can help relieve discomfort and restore your hearing. Schedule an appointment at our ENT offices in Torrance or El Segundo, CA to learn more about managing ear pressure.
How Do You Treat Ear Pressure?
You may be able to relieve ear pressure at home by closing your mouth, gently pinching your nose, and blowing lightly to help open the eustachian tube. Yawning, chewing gum, or using a saline rinse to clear your nasal passages can also make a noticeable difference.
If your symptoms are linked to congestion, inflammation, or an illness, your doctor at Beach Cities ENTS may recommend medications such as decongestants, nasal sprays, antibiotics, or steroids to help reduce swelling and restore normal function. If allergies are playing a role, then you might benefit from allergy testing and targeted treatment to reduce irritation and prevent symptoms from returning.
More severe or persistent cases of ear pressure might require a more specialized approach to relieve. This may include eustachian tube balloonplasty to help open up the tube, a myringotomy with ear tube placement to drain fluid, or endoscopic sinus surgery to remove blockages.
If enlarged adenoids or nasal polyps are contributing to the issue, removing them surgically may also provide long-term relief.
What Are the Benefits of Treatment for Ear Pressure?
It can be difficult to know when to see a doctor for ear pressure. If you're experiencing ongoing pain, hearing loss, or bleeding from the ear, or if home treatments don't seem to be working, we recommend scheduling a consultation with our ENT specialists in Torrance or El Segundo, CA to get to the root of the problem. The benefits of our specialized ear pressure treatments include:

Beach Cities ENTS Reviews
This was my first time to visit this office. It was clean and efficient. I arrived early and was taken in immediately. The nurse practitioner was very good. He diagnosed what was wrong quickly and called a doctor in to consult. I am set up for a procedure. This was after visiting three other doctors who weren't sure. Not happy to have to have a procedure but happy it is finally being taken care of.
Always welcoming, professional, courteous, and on time!
Excellent care. I was impressed with the knowledge of information I received during my appointment. I feel better informed. The staff.was very friendly and helpful.
So glad to have Dr. Eivaz as my ENT Specialist. He is quietly and humbly confident in his knowledge of his profession. Thank you Doctor!
Quick to be seen, everyone nice, helpful, and professional
