What Is Nasal Spray Overuse?
Nasal sprays can be effective tools against congestion, inflammation, and other concerns, but they also present a variety of dangers if not used correctly.
Over time, your nose becomes less responsive to the medication in over-the-counter nasal sprays, and the relief they once provided starts to fade. As the effect wears off, the nasal passages can become even more swollen and congested than before, forcing you to use the spray more frequently just to maintain your ability to breathe. In more advanced cases, you may start to feel like you can't breathe through your nose at all without a nasal spray to help. This is what's called nasal spray overuse, or rhinitis medicamentosa.
Not all nasal sprays cause this problem. Saline sprays are safe to use regularly and help keep the nasal passages moist and clear. Steroid nasal sprays can also reduce inflammation when used properly under guidance. However, certain sprays, including some zinc-based products (like Zicam™), carry additional risks and may even lead to permanent loss of smell, making proper use especially important.
At Beach Cities ENTS, we encourage the responsible use of nasal sprays and can help patients who struggle with nasal spray dependence. If you or someone you know struggles with nasal spray overuse, we urge you to reach out to our ENT providers in Torrance or El Segundo, CA to take a step toward recovery.
How Do You Treat Nasal Spray Overuse?
The first step in breaking the cycle of nasal spray dependence is to stop using your decongestant. Depending on the product and how long you've been using it, your provider at Beach Cities ENTS may recommend tapering off slowly by diluting the spray or reducing how often you take it. Your congestion will likely worsen at first, but it should ease over time as your nasal tissues start to recover and function normally again.
To help ease symptoms, we may recommend a number of treatments, including:
- Nasal steroid sprays: These are often introduced to reduce inflammation inside the nose and support healing. They are used daily and may take several days to begin working.
- Saline sprays or rinses: Regular use helps keep the nasal passages moist, clears out mucus, and soothes irritated tissue during recovery.
- Medical support and guidance: In some cases, additional medications may be recommended to make the transition more comfortable and reduce severe swelling. Your provider at Beach Cities ENTS will guide you through the process and adjust treatment based on your symptoms.
With the right approach, most people are able to successfully stop using decongestant sprays and regain more natural, comfortable breathing.
What Are the Benefits of Treatment for Nasal Spray Overuse?

Beach Cities ENTS Reviews
This was my first time to visit this office. It was clean and efficient. I arrived early and was taken in immediately. The nurse practitioner was very good. He diagnosed what was wrong quickly and called a doctor in to consult. I am set up for a procedure. This was after visiting three other doctors who weren't sure. Not happy to have to have a procedure but happy it is finally being taken care of.
Always welcoming, professional, courteous, and on time!
Excellent care. I was impressed with the knowledge of information I received during my appointment. I feel better informed. The staff.was very friendly and helpful.
So glad to have Dr. Eivaz as my ENT Specialist. He is quietly and humbly confident in his knowledge of his profession. Thank you Doctor!
